She Turns 74
By Navaneetha Mokkil
She turns 74 yesterday
And tells my nephew
she is 47
He is too old now to
believe her
yet old enough
to let her be.
They dance together
to the music of ‘happy
birthday to you’
Laugh together
She spreads her arms
and twirls.
Her hip-hugging hair
twirls with her.
Their laughter merges
as I watch them on screen
I laugh too.
My sister holding the
phone must be laughing too.
So many ages in one phone screen
So many pixelated movements
So much laughter to hold onto.
